Surge Gaming
What is Surge?
Surge is MGLVA’s gaming program. It is open to any student in grades K-12. We meet socially to play games of common interests. Sessions will be based on grade levels and/or games that will be played at each events. Competitive teams can be tried out for by student members that are at least 13 years old as well!

The League
Stride eSports
MGLVA is now part of the newly formed K12 Esports League, where students compete against other K12 student players from around the country. Here, students can test out their skills in a private league of their peers and play against various schools, with additional signups available throughout the year.
Surge FAQs
What is the time commitment to be on a competitive team?
Students should expect to devote a minimum of three hours per week outside of normal school hours, with a mandatory one-hour practice session. Competitive matches will take place in the evenings on a weekly basis. Students are encouraged to organize and participate in additional practices on their own time. Currently, all league activities are scheduled to occur Monday through Friday, except on national holidays. Voluntary activities may be scheduled during these times later in the season.
What are the eligibility requirements to be in Surge Gaming?
To become a member of Surge, a student or learning coach must reach out to Trevor Penn at trpenn@mglva.org to obtain the interest survey to fill out. Once that has been completed, the Surge handbook with all requirements and expectations will be sent to the student. It will have a form to be electronically signed by both student and learning coach in order for the student to become a full and active member of Surge Gaming.
I want to play a game not offered by the league, what should I do?
A limited selection of games is currently available. We plan to expand game offerings in the future as the program grows. Suggestions will be taken into consideration and are appreciated.
