What Are Early Middle Colleges

Early Middle Colleges (EMCs) are innovative educational programs that combine high school and college coursework, allowing students to earn substantial college credit—up to an associate degree or industry certification—while completing their high school diploma. EMCs provide a unique opportunity to prepare students for higher education and career success without incurring significant costs.

How does it work?

Beginning in the 11th grade, MGLVA+WSCC EMC students continue their high school coursework at Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy with the opportunity to simultaneously enroll in online courses at West Shore Community College. This program affords students the ability to earn college credits while still in high school through enrollment in college-level coursework. Students will learn in a college environment that fosters maturity and academic growth, gaining vital knowledge and skills for career and college success. MGLVA+WSCC EMC offers a strong focus on student development of success skills necessary for college, career, and life. Students will participate in weekly colloquia and monthly workshops to focus on skill attainment, in addition to college courses.

Testimonials

“I’ve enjoyed my time with EMC. I’ve been able to learn in a college class in high school and it’s been really fun. Not to mention I’ve met others like myself who want to put in the work toward our future education. This program is helping my transition into the college world go a lot smoother by making a plan for me to look forward to.” – Winnie, 2nd Year EMC Student

“My experience has been great so far, I am building better social skills and looking forward to a brighter future! Groups have the most impact for me it is both a little anxiety producing but also very fun at the same time. Groups are also what helped me the most because it helped me step a bit out of my comfort zone and connect to other students and understand what leadership and teamwork is.” – Shiann, 1st Year EMC Student
