The Math of Pumpkins

Stories & Spotlights

Fall in Michigan means cooler weather, colorful leaves, and, of course—pumpkins! Whether you’re carving them, baking them into pies, or decorating your front porch, pumpkins aren’t just fun…they’re also a great way to practice math. At Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy (MGLVA), we believe learning is everywhere—and that includes your pumpkin patch adventures.

Here are some fun, hands-on pumpkin math activities your family can try at home this October.

1. Measuring Circumference

Grab a measuring tape (or a piece of string) and wrap it around your pumpkin’s middle. Record the circumference and compare it with other pumpkins. Which one is the biggest? Which one is the smallest? You can even create a bar graph to show your results.

2. Estimating Seeds

Before you scoop out your pumpkin, take a guess—how many seeds are inside? Write down your estimate, then count them as you go. (Tip: For younger kids, group seeds into piles of 10 or 20 to make counting easier.)

3. Pumpkin Weights

Use a household scale (or weigh yourself with and without the pumpkin) to find out how heavy it is. Ask questions like:

Which pumpkin is heavier?

How many smaller pumpkins would equal the weight of the biggest one?

Can we graph the weights of all the pumpkins we measured?

4. Pumpkin Multiplication

If you carved three pumpkins and each had about 400 seeds, how many seeds did you scoop out in total? Older students can use pumpkins for multiplication or even explore averages (e.g., “The average number of seeds per pumpkin is…”).

5. Symmetry in Pumpkin Carving

When carving jack-o’-lanterns, talk about symmetry. Does your pumpkin face look the same on both sides? Could you fold it in half and match the eyes, nose, and mouth?

Why Pumpkin Math Works

Pumpkin math is hands-on, messy, and fun—which means kids remember it! At MGLVA, we love making learning interactive and engaging, both online and offline. Whether it’s exploring the circumference of a pumpkin or calculating averages with seeds, these activities bring math to life in a way that connects to real-world experiences.
